RWBY (pronounced "Ruby")[6] is an American anime-influenced adult figurer-animated web series created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth.[7] [eight] Information technology is set in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (called "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to protect their world from monsters called Grimm. The name RWBY is derived from the 4 main protagonists' forenames: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, and their respective theme colors (blood-red, white, black and yellow).[9]

Following several promotional trailers, the first episode was screened at the Rooster Teeth convention event RTX and so released on their website in July 2013. Subsequent episodes were released approximately weekly, start to Rooster Teeth's subscribers and then to YouTube a calendar week later on. The series became a viral hit, and a second season, subtitled Volume ii, was released in July 2014.

Oum died in 2015, during product of the 3rd flavor for the series.[ten] This resulted in a delay in the production, as well as an overall shift in the series production and release schedule. Despite the creator's death, the remaining crew members confirmed their intention to continue the series,[xi] and Volume iii was released in 2015 as planned.[12] Meanwhile, the first two seasons were released to habitation media and fabricated bachelor on streaming services such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, the latter of which would include releases of the electric current season in their simulcasts. In October 2016, the fourth season was released. The series has as well been dubbed in Japanese and circulate by Tokyo MX,[xiii] in partnership with Warner Bros. Nihon. Rooster Teeth released a video game called RWBY: Grimm Eclipse, as well as a spin-off series chosen RWBY Chibi in 2016.

As of March 2021, the website has aired eight volumes. Rooster Teeth appear volumes eight and nine on October 3, 2019.[xiv] The eighth book premiered on November vii, 2020.[fifteen] The ninth volume is currently in production, and volition begin airing in 2022.

Development [edit]

My vision for the prove was to present a 2-dimensional, toon-shaded expect, merely with all of the depth and complexity of a 3D-animated production. I wanted to be able to movement the cameras and characters freely while however capturing the essence of the flat, line-fatigued look of traditional anime.

RWBY had been a long-standing concept of Oum's for years before information technology began development. Towards the end of his work on the 10th season of Rooster Teeth'southward Ruby-red vs. Blue, he developed the colour-coding approach to character names and design as a hook for the series.[17] During production on Red vs. Blue season 10, Oum asked series creator Burnie Burns if they could produce RWBY post-obit the conclusion of that flavour. Burns, worried for the production schedule, told Oum "If you lot finish Season 10, and so yous can do whatever you want." Production on RWBY began as intended, with the first trailer being finished within two weeks and premiering later on the credits of the Crimson vs. Blue flavour x finale on November 5, 2012.[18]

Oum designed the characters with assistance from creative person Ein Lee, utilizing designs inspired past classic fairy tale characters.[17] Each character has an associated color, and it is the first messages of the master character's colors, cherry-red, white, black, and yellow, that give the series its name.[19] The characters' names too share the same letter and the meaning equally the colour (e.one thousand. "Weiss Schnee" translates to "snow white" in German). The series was originally written by Oum, along with fellow Rooster Teeth employees Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross.[xx] Oum was initially concerned about a story focusing on female characters existence adult by a primarily male person crew, just said they managed to do well developing the female person characters.[eighteen] Regarding the design, Oum wanted to "present a ii-dimensional, toon-shaded await, but with all of the depth and complexity of a 3D-blithe production". Seasons 1 to 3 were blithe by Rooster Teeth'south internal animation squad using Smith Micro's Poser software, out of assets built on Autodesk Maya.[21] [22] Starting in Season 4, episodes are at present being animated in Maya. The series' music is equanimous by Jeff Williams, who previously composed the soundtracks for Seasons viii–10 of Red vs. Blueish, and features vocals by Williams' daughter, Casey Lee Williams.

In book seven, they successfully get in at the kingdom of Atlas and work with others towards a mutual goal. Yet, the antagonists are continuing to cause chaos and devastation and growing as a looming threat. In the final current volume, the team continues to defend from previous forces of evil and even the kingdoms own armed forces general. Reception [edit]

Critical response [edit]

Since its debut, RWBY has received generally positive reviews from critics. Commentators discussing the promotional trailers lauded the show's animation mode and its musical soundtrack. The trailers prompted enthusiastic anticipation for the serial premiere.[20] [25] [27] When the get-go episode premiered at RTX, it was popular with attendees to the point that seating was full at all three screenings. Amanda Rush, writing for Crunchyroll, noted the anime and Western influences of the series, and praised information technology as "quick-witted, exciting, lovely to await at" maxim fans of anime would relish it.[23] The Yakima Herald-Commonwealth called it "thrilling" and "captivating" and praised its "beautiful" 3D character blitheness.[120] The Austin Chronicle described the premiere as making Oum the "rock star" of Rooster Teeth.[121] By mid-2013, the series had reportedly contributed to a nine% increase in views for Rooster Teeth's official YouTube channel.[122] Kotaku's Richard Eisenbeis praised the serial for its clever use of fairytale elements, fun and enjoyable dialogue, and the fighting choreography, but was critical about the brusque nature of the episodes, stating that, "The biggest drawback in doing a micro-series ... is that there is precious lilliputian fourth dimension for good characterization". He was also critical of the technical bug of the animation, mentioning that the animation is good when the audition is unable to encounter the character'southward feet. He believes that RWBY is "a good starting time step into a earth of possibilities."[123]

Associations with anime [edit]

"As huge fans of anime, we are honored that RWBY is the start American anime production to be exported to audiences in Nihon."

— CEO Rooster Teeth Matt Hullum[124]

Lindsay Jones (Cherry-red Rose) said "Nosotros were worried about the reception we'd get, since nosotros're a western company producing something normally related to Nippon. Funnily plenty, we showed our Japanese cohorts RWBY and they started arguing about whether information technology was anime or not! But seeing the reception from audiences is so surreal, and we never expected it."[125] A Moving-picture show Airplane pilot web log listed the RWBY-equally-anime topic amongst its "flame wars you don't want to be part of".[126] Anime News Network writers Paul Jensen and James Beckett wrote: "We don't have any formal reviews of RWBY hither on ANN, but it is kind of cool to meet an American product brand information technology to the release encyclopedia."[127] Michael Mauer of The Cornell Daily Sun wrote that the upshot was still being debated among the anime community,[128] while Sabrina Pyun of ComicsVerse wrote "The prove is known for many things, from its dubious status as an anime to its unique 3D animation style."[129] However, mainstream news articles dated after Hullum'south statement and previewing later seasons and the franchise have referred to RWBY equally an American anime, including Diverseness,[130] Collider,[131] iDigitalTimes,[132] Entertainment Weekly,[133] Adweek,[134] and Deadline Hollywood.[135]
